Overcharging

I bought a phone (Nokia n75) right before I went to Europe. For the first two days it kept checking my email. I deleted my email address from the phone. I used it once a day to connect to the internet (through my laptop) to download emails. After 7 days, the phone got shut off. My bill was up to $2800, I didn't have a history established of bills in that dollar range. When I returned, I talked to a rep and they said that there is still another 35 mb to bill me, it just got shut off at $2800. I've talked another time (after asking for a supervisor) and they are not budging. The last thing she said to me that this will adversly affect my credit so I should pay it as soon as possible.

I really don't understand why (A) they didn't try to contact me and let me know that my phone was racking up these charges, and (B) why if I didn't have a history of having charges of this magnitude it took my bill getting to 2800 bucks for them to shut it off?

I admit ignorance in buying a phone hours before an international trip. Not knowing anything about the phone and presuming that when I shut the phone, or turned it off that it would stop collecting emails.
